Benue State Investment and Property Company Limited has launched the zero-emission Green Wheel Taxi Cabs in Makurdi, aiming to address the cost of transportation in the metropolis.
The Group Managing Director of BIPC, Dr Raymond Asemakaha, while performing the ceremony on Monday, said 500 cars will be acquired between now and December this year, while 8,500 direct jobs will be created in the process.
“The commissioning of this electric car is a testament to our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly transportation. Electric vehicles are the future of mobility, and I’m thrilled to see this innovative technology being adopted in our community,” he said.
According to him, the car represents a significant step towards reducing the reliance on fossil fuels, decreasing air pollution, and mitigating the impacts of climate change, and he commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for bringing the project to life.
In his remarks, the project partner, Mr. Okey Eze, acknowledged the foresight of BIPC for seeing the vision to patronize fuel-free taxis, saying city people in Makurdi will have comfort and an affordable transport system.
Mr. Eze explained that the taxi has full security features installed to monitor all its movements, while an assembly plant will be built in the state to train artisans, thereby creating job opportunities for the youths.
Earlier, Head of Business Development and Strategy Mrs. Theresa Abeda noted that the launch of one hundred percent emission cars would transform the landscape of the state capital.
She commended the partners for the cooperation, even as ten cars were displayed for the exercise.
