Dangote Cement Transport deploys real-time monitoring device to curb highway risks

Dangote Cement Transport, Obajana, has reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and accident prevention with the successful hosting of its Drivers’ Safety Awareness Campaign for Q1 2026, themed “2026, Our Year of Zero Harm.”

The campaign, held at the Obajana plant in Kogi State, brought together hundreds of truck drivers, senior management staff, law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders in a united effort to reinforce the company’s goal of zero accidents, zero injuries, and zero tolerance for unsafe practices.

Speaking at the event, Divisional Director, Transport Obajana, Col. Hemant Rana, described safety as more than a corporate policy, stressing that it is a shared responsibility.

He urged drivers to approach every journey with vigilance, discipline, and accountability.

Fleet Safety Lead, Nigeria, Mr. Ozovehe Abraham, outlined the objectives of the campaign, emphasising strict compliance with safety standards, defensive driving techniques, and the role of drivers as ambassadors of safety on Nigerian highways.

Head of Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI), Mr. Charles Theophilus, underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration, noting that partnerships with regulatory bodies remain critical to raising national road safety standards.

Representatives of key security and regulatory agencies also addressed participants.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), represented by Deputy State Commander and Desk Officer, Joint Integrity Test, Mr. Momoh Yakubu, warned against drug and substance abuse, highlighting its devastating impact on driver performance and public safety.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), represented by Deputy Corps Commandant Mr. Odogiyan Moses, emphasised strict adherence to traffic regulations and national road safety laws.

The Nigeria Police Force, represented by ASP Raji Olakayode, reminded drivers of their duty to uphold lawful conduct and discipline on the highways.

Security experts, including Rtd. Major Omotosho Isiaka and Rtd. Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Mamman Audu, urged drivers to remain vigilant and security-conscious while complying fully with traffic regulations.

Head of Safety, Dangote Cement Transport Obajana, Mr. Adebayo Ogunnupe, led drivers in a pledge of commitment to the company’s safety policies.

The company has invested significantly in technology-driven monitoring systems to track driver behaviour, vehicle speed, and route compliance in real time. These systems enable supervisors to detect unsafe practices early and intervene proactively.

Building on discussions at the 2025 Drivers’ Retreat in Obajana, the company reaffirmed the role of telematics, GPS tracking, and automated alerts in strengthening accountability and protecting lives.

Beyond technology, Dangote Cement continues to prioritise community engagement and sustainability, with a focus on safer roads, reduced accidents, and improved transport discipline in host communities.

The Obajana plant, which operates one of the largest truck fleets in Sub-Saharan Africa, has also integrated continuous driver retraining programmes to refresh skills and reinforce safety culture.
