The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has blamed most fatal road accidents across the country on night travels and overloading.
The Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, said this following a fatal crash that occurred along the Kano-Ringim road on Friday, June 2, which involved 35 people, with 12 injured and 18 killed.
About 40,000 people die annually from road crashes in the country, according to figures from the FRSC.
The ICIR had reported that between January 1 and April 12 this year, 2,463 crashes involved 3,965 vehicles conveying 16,102 people, out of which 1,349 died and 7,744 were injured.
In a statement on Sunday by its assistant corps marshal, Bisi Kazeem, the FRSC boss warned motorists against dangerous driving, overloading, and night travels.
He said patience and collective vigilance on the roads could prevent unnecessary and unwarranted road accidents that could lead to the loss of lives and properties.
According to Biu, all hands must be on deck to ensure that overloading is reduced to the barest minimum if not completely avoided.
“On June 2, a crash occurred at about 20:35hrs in Zakirai town, Kano-Ringim road.
“The crash was fatal, involved two commercial vehicles with registration WRW243AA Volkswagen Sharon, overloaded with children, and a Toyota bus also overloaded. To add to it, the Sharon engaged in dangerous and wrongful overtaking,” he said.
All injured victims were taken to Kano town for medication, Biu explained.
He added that all FRSC facilities are open to attend to members of the public.
