GreenLight Initiative Pushes For Healthier, Safer, Sustainable Mobility At COP28

Mr. Simon Patrick Obi, President, GreenLight Initiative, a devoted Road Safety Advocate and a current Public Health student from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has called on the Nigerian government to prioritize and implement green and sustainable mobility solutions, describing it as a game changer for the climate, requiring government’s investment in initiatives that promote sustainable transportation and adopting policies that encourage the use of electric vehicles, public transportation, and cycling thereby contributing to global efforts in reducing carbon emissions from the transportation sector.
Obi made the call at the ongoing Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, which began on the 30th of November, stressing that “transportation remains the largest contributor to CO2 emissions globally, GreenLight.”

Adding, “It’s an honor to be attending COP28 in Dubai and contributing as a guest panelist in four sessions. I believe that the inclusion of Health Day, for the first time in COP, marks a significant achievement for public health; safe and sustainable mobility; and indeed, a broader battle against climate crises. Together, the world is advancing crucial discussions at the intersection of climate action, public health, and well-being.”

Transportation accounts for around one-fifth of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions which is 24% of global carbon dioxide emissions, constituting a pressing challenge in the fight against climate change.

Unfortunately, the road transport sector is responsible for about 15% of the total CO2 emissions from transportation worldwide. This alarming figure underscores the urgency for transformative measures to address emissions from vehicles and enhance sustainable transportation systems, Obi said.
The Conference of the Parties (COP) has continued to gather member countries annually to establish ambition, and responsibilities, and evaluate climate measures. This year’s session, the COP28, is being hosted by the government of the United Arab Emirates in Dubai from 30th November – 12 December 2023.
Greenlight’s participation at COP28 reflects its commitment to advocating for environmentally friendly transportation policies and practices. The organization will actively engage with stakeholders, policymakers, and experts to emphasize the importance of prioritizing healthier, greener, and sustainable mobility solutions.
GreenLight Initiative is committed to promoting safe and sustainable mobility as well as climate action. Through advocacy, research awareness campaigns, and collaborative initiatives, GrenLight strives to inspire positive changes in policies and behaviors to create a more sustainable future.
