Greenlight Initiative Implores Government To Prioritise Safe Public Transportation, Walking/Cycling

In commemoration of the 7th UN Road Safety Week 2023, GreenLight Initiative has called on the government to prioritize walking, cycling, and safe public transportation in Nigeria.

According to the organization, the UN Road Safety Week is a biennial global road safety campaign celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of road safety and to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by road crashes.

According to Mr. Simon Obi, Executive Director, Greenlight Initiative, “The 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week is scheduled to take place from May 15th to May 21st, 2023 with the theme; Sustainable transport, focusing on the need for governments to facilitate a shift to walking, cycling, and the use of public transport.

“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among young people aged between 5 and 29. In addition to the tragic loss of life, traffic collisions result in significant economic losses, costing countries billions of dollars annually. However, by adopting sustainable transport solutions such as walking, cycling, and public transport, we can reduce the number of crashes and promote a more sustainable future,” he added.

Speaking about the benefits, Obi asserted that walking and cycling not only promote physical activity and reduce the risk of chronic diseases but also reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, leading to improved public health and a cleaner environment.

“Additionally, investing in public transport can improve access to essential services and promote economic growth.” He opined.

Obi emphasized that for the occasion this year, his organization with the support from the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety is calling on governments to take action in promoting sustainable transport, which includes investing in infrastructure such as dedicated cycling and walking lanes, promoting the use of public transport through improved services and subsidies while encouraging walking and cycling through education and awareness campaigns.

“By doing so, we can improve road safety, protect our environment, and create a more sustainable future for all.” Registered as Greenlight Development Centre, Greenlight Initiative is a non-profit organization promoting road safety, good health, the environment, and safe and sustainable mobility in Africa.
